What if Bobby had died in 1995 instead of Jerry? Assuming that all of the post-GD tours would have still happened, who would have taken Bobby's place? I don't know why, but on the way to work this morning that thought popped into my head. Nobody can be right or wrong, but I think that it would be interesting to hear who people think would have been offered the job. Personally, I have no clue and wouldn't know who to suggest.

well, seeing the way that the post Jerry crew went out and cherry-picked from DSO and the Zen Tricksters, Rob Eaton would be the likely candidate.

I don't think they would have continued as the Grateful Dead. Losing Jerry, Phil or Bob is too big a blow, in my opinion. Jerry would have focused on his own band and his work with Grisman.

forget who said this, but the quote is something like this, "the only ones in the Dead who could really play was Garcia, Lesh and Billy K., when they were cooking the Dead was on, the rest of the band was just going along for the ride..."

If they were referring to 65-69, they might have a point. IMHO, Bob's playing improved immensely in a few short years... clearly improved by 71-72. If you ever tried to play "Bob" guitar parts, it ain't easy. You can fault him for occasional bad taste or lounge lizard vocals, but his guitar fills are still unique and his fretboard knowledge is encyclopedic. For me, his most important roles in the band were to spell Jerry on vocals and shift the direction of a show back into high gear, in addition to playing a second lead line. Since Jerry was a lazy songwriter, Weir song contributions can't be overlooked either.

In what way was Jerry a lazy songwriter. I don't think I've heard that one before.

There is no doubt about that; I've said that many a time...

Right? I probably don't give Billy enough credit (I put him at a distant, but important third; citing Garcia's solo album as good evidence).

Sorry, Bob fans!

I believe that Butch Trucks was the author of that horse shit quote Strat and he did not specify an era when making the comment. To my ear the more challenging part of the bands catalog between 10/19/71 and 10/20/74 was dependent on all five musicians equally, the resultant music was a genuine group effort.

While I can't really speak for what a 1995 -> whenever grouping of Jer,Phil and Billy would have sounded like I surely would have enjoyed hearing them give it a shot,at it's worst it could not be as embarrassing as Furthur.

maybe Trucks, Pig Street mentioned the Alman's, sounds familiar...

I don't agree with this in entirety, although Garcia, Lesh and BK are the core...however Weir's playing style with the interplay and riffing and unorthodox chording is critical to the formation of their trademark sound...Godcheaux and Mydland both had moments of greatness...

As great as both Jerry and Phil were/are, Grateful Dead was definitely greater than the sum of their parts.

Jerry's guitar was no doubt the lead instrument, but I think a case could made for all the other players being unorthodox and interacting in a somewhat unorthodox manner musically creating a unique type of music.Lesh and Billy certainly were not sitting back in the pocket like a normal rhythm section,Keith's style of accenting and fills was unusual and Weir is singular in style. Also Jerry's style of leading the music was very group oriented and was based on what the other guys were playing a good deal of the time.Once again I am talking about Dark Star,Other One,the more jam oriented material from Keith's introduction through74',the rest of their catalog and other era's are a different story.

It would have been interesting if Jerry and Phil did get back to play together . I suspect Garcai would have been much less game than Weir has been, to go back and play the old psychedelic stuff . I guess the question in this, is, was Garcia's work with his own band, and Grisman, more what he wanted to really do or was it "I want to something different from I do with the Dead" . If the second is correct, than he might have done more with the surviving members . Maybe something more exploratory ? I don't think it would have been a Bob-less Grateful Dead . I think he was the most tired of the routine ( but also didn't seem to want to take the steps to change it ) .
Weir and Garcia had a totally unique musical relationship . They could never replace him . In a sort of weird way, Bob would have been even more irreplaceable than Jerry . His playing style is completely original in a fundamental way; no one plays that way ! Garcia fit the conventional concept of the "lead guitarist", but, of-course an amazing original sounding poetic soulful lead guitarist . One might also make the same case for Phil, who plays bass the way he does ?
It is an interesting "what if" .

Sorry--too easy; recall that they did do the experiment, with the Hartbeats. They sometimes played those with the likes of Elvin Bishop, though that isn't necessarily to say they gave him an audition...

Imagine if Mick Taylor took another spin at touring. He could play just about anything you asked him to play.As much as I don't like Journey Neal Schon is another ,he played w/ Santana.

Jerry would have had one more reason to push to end the band. he had not been happy with what it had become for many years.
